Johann Arens uses installation and video to survey the documentary properties of public interiors. By systematically re-editing the hardware of a location he draws up an abstract inventory of the social textures inherent in the site. At Intersections he is presenting Early Adopters, a new installation using a modular tripod system and elements from Herman Miller’s Action Office 2, the contract furniture series, which became the template for office labour worldwide. Early Adopters was especially designed for the Schiegebouw at the Van Nellefabriek.
Arens was born in Aachen, Germany (1981). After completing his MFA in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London, he has worked on public commissions assigned by Arnolfini / Art and the Public Realm Bristol, Letchworth Heritage Foundation, Jerwood Foundation London and Kettle’s Yard Cambridge. He was awarded the Rome Fellowship in Contemporary Art by the British Academy and has been resident at Fondazione Antonio Ratti and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

Johann Arens gebruikt video en installatie om de eigenschappen van openbare interieurs te onderzoeken. Door de ‘hardware’ van een bepaalde locatie systematisch te re-editen, construeert hij een geabstraheerde inventaris van de onderliggende sociale textuur van de betreffende locatie. Op Intersections toont hij Early Adopters, een nieuwe installatie bestaande uit modulaire systemen; statief-sculpturen en elementen van Herman Millers Action Office 2, de meubelserie die een wereldwijde standaard werd voor kantoorwerk. Early Adopters is speciaal ontworpen voor de ruimte van het Schiegebouw van de Van Nellefabriek.
Arens is geboren in Aken, Duitsland (1981). Na het afronden van zijn MFA aan de Goldsmiths, Universiteit van Londen realiseerde hij werk in opdracht van Arnolfini / Art and the Public Realm Bristol, Letchworth Heritage Foundation, Jerwood Foundation London en Kettle’s Yard Cambridge.
