As a whole the project is referring to architecture and language: different elements are used as fragments of a larger whole. A principle which is translated in both the individual exhibitions as well as the series. All the participating artists are collectors. Collectors of images, texts and numbers, of materials, objects, buildings and landscapes. They tap into their external surroundings and internal thoughts and forge both worlds into a highly personal and unique content and  imagery.

About API Istanbul
Artist initiatives are a recent phenomenon in Turkey, many of them started after 2005 and most just arrived at the phase that they began to look abroad for collaboration. However due to the undivided support by the various (normally competing) parties in the Turkish art and curatorial scene, some initiatives such as for example PIST have gained international attention recently with presentations in Frieze, The Armory Show 2010 and ‘No Soul For Sale 2010 – A Festival of Independents’ at Tate Modern. Dutch initiatives can benefit from initiating collaborations with these initiatives as much as the other way around.

The 2010 edition is a first step in the direction of developing an international off-spaces fair in Istanbul at Tüyap. Because of the perspective of 2012, the year when the Netherlands and Turkey celebrate 400 years of diplomatic ties, the idea is that the Dutch and Turkish initiatives will be able to meet and develop projects or realize residencies and artist-exchanges together that will be realized in the coming years. Therefore the impact of the 2010 Art and Book fair will extend beyond the duration of the fair.

The participating Dutch initiatives are: The Sandberg Institute, Z, 1646, Baracca, Satellietgroep, P/////AKT, Service Garage, European Exchange Academy, ZetFoundation, M4 Gastatelier, Noordkaap, kuS, IRFAK, Ground Magazine, PLANETART and Palatti.
