Esper Postma - Por algo será
The Principle Rules I
Opening: Saturday April 28, 20-24 hrs
Until: Sunday May 27, Thu - Su, 14-18 hrs

Esper Postma poses questions about the idea of objectivity and the way we organise our environment according to rigorous judgement and strict ways of thinking. Which values and meanings are being attributed to elements in our environment? How are these conditioned by the context that they are placed in? This can be a physical context, like architecture, or  a conceptual one,  in the form of for instance knowledge.

How does the connection between these categories find expression? He deals with these questions by using transpositions and displacements as a way of creating. By the recontextualisation of environments or events the viewer is being stimulated to relate to them in a different way.  He doesn’t only exhibit an image, but also a way of thinking that invites the viewer to reflect on it but at the same time provides an alternative.

At P/////AKT Postma is presenting a new work dealing with the complexities of reconstructing a personal history. Por algo será (there must be a reason) is a two channel video projection based on one person’s experience from the Dirty War, the state terrorism during the military dictatorship in Argentina from 1976 until 1983. Actress Paula Juan Lima was invited to write a script based on her memories of the night of the military coup, when her mother was arrested, and to take on the role as a director for their reenactment. The resulting installation considers the way that memories and stories are constructed and become mediated, by showing on and  off  stage footage and interweaving images and events into an associative composition.

The Principle Rules (featuring resp. Esper Postma, Hedwig Houben, Marianne Vierø and Sybren de Boer) is the fourth project within the presentation format on art as a Mental Space. The program consists of serial solo presentations whereby each series has a specific focus. Each edition has a moderator as an extra partcipant. The moderator’s role is to represent an external perspective, to reflect on the concept and the exhibitions and to communicate his conclusions, ideas or thoughts.
The Principle Rules is focusing on art as a “readable” principle, by which recognizable elements function as a basis for the construction of a visual language and the grammar of a different reality. Directed from one basic thought or gesture, but in the end primarily intuitive and poetic in result.

Moderator Chrétien Breukers is a literary all-rounder. He is a writer, poet, editor and publisher of contemporary poetry. Know by a wider audience as De Contrabas (‘The Double Bass’ is the most visited blog on literature in The Netherlands) and generally acknowledged as a central figure in the field of literature. On his blog he publishes reviews and columns as well as a poetry forum. Among others through the Facebook-version (the Contrabas assistent) he engages daily with the literary, cultural and social debate and reflects on culture and the position of culture in society.
